Age to start sheath cleaning?

What age should you start cleaning a horses sheath? I have a 1 year old gelding ,so i was just wondering when i should start cleaning it. Also how do you clean a horses sheath if they have never had that area handled much?

  1. well you start by there belly and tell them easy than bet your way up and wtch his ears so you can see if hes gettin pissy or not  and then if hees not see if theres any crud up there if there is clean it but make sure hes use to it and you touching him


  2. If it was my horse, now. As the other poster said get him use to it. & Yeah, start slow. I start by touching the belly, also. Then go from there.

  3. Start at a young age. Get him used to being touched. You should be able to touch a horse anywhere that doesn't hurt  without him resisting. After he has become used to you touching and cleaning, he will know what you are doing and will even drop down for you which makes cleaning the smegma much easier!!! (No, he's not getting excited. If you look, his eyes will probably be at half mast and he'll be close to napping.)
