Question:

Agencys that provide assistance for paying sales tax on a car?

Here is my situation. I bought a car in December, and I can not afford to pay the sales tax (About 1,200$), therefore, I cannot get my car tagged legally due to lack of paid sales tax. Anyone know of any assistance programs for this, or what should I do?

And anyone know what my punishments for driving with expired tags would be, and will you get pulled over for this??

If it helps I live in Missouri.

  1. There are no agencies that help with car taxes. When purchasing, you may have been able to include them in the loan but it is too late now. Should you get stopped with expired plates, you will walk from this area and they will tow your vehicle. You will be ticketed, have towing and storage bills to pay before it will be released (plus being required to have the new license plates).

  2. I've never heard of any program that helps with sales tax on a car.  That is not considered a necessity like food, heat and shelter.  Maybe you should turn the car back in since you cannot afford it and get a cheaper one.

Yes, you can get pulled over for expired tags and they can tow your car.  Then the tow yard will not release your vehicle until it is legal, so you will incur storage and tow fees, which add up very quickly.
