I would imagine that common sense would dictate the following steps:
1. Football manager of club identifies player who interests him.
2. Approaches board with suggestion,
3. Board sanction transfer bid.
4. Player accepts/declines offer.
Over-simplified, maybe. The club who have the player in question may refuse the bid, contract conditions may not suit the player, etc.
My point is, and I am talking about Pater Lawell in respect to the Scottish game, why are finance-orientated people having the casting vote on who leaves or joins a club ? Surely the footballing staff, and manager in particular, are much better qualified ?
By all means, allow the money folk to draw up the contract and discuss with the player and his agent.
Surely identifying who comes to the club or who leaves should be made by the manager ?
