Agenda set for GM meetings in Toronto
All the general managers from around the National Hockey League will sit down in Toronto on Tuesday 9 November and discuss the most pertinent issues surrounding the game in North America. According to the Canadian Press the agenda has been set for the meetings
and talks will be dominated by a proposed coach’s challenge, changes to the all-star game, and the development of a social media policy.
The meetings held in November generally do not bring about any major rules changes, but help to set the table for the meetings held in March where the majority of decisions are made.
The coach’s challenge has been the most discussed rule change as of late, after Florida Panthers GM Dale Tallon put forth the idea concept, which would give coaches the opportunity to challenge one goal-related play per game. The concept has gathered steam
in several circles, but does not seem to have enough support to be instituted before March.
The GMs also plan to discuss small changes to the all-star format and a venue change for the scouting combine.
One of the most pressing issues on the agenda surrounds the development of a social media policy. Currently the NHL is the only North American league that does not have a formal policy for players to use both Twitter and Facebook. The idea of developing
such a policy was placed on the agenda by the Phoenix Coyotes GM Don Maloney, who has a number of players active on Twitter.
“As social media continues to evolve into a mainstream media vehicle, we are working on an organizational policy that will allow our athletes to express their thoughts and ideas yet not embarrass themselves and/or the club,” Maloney said to the Canadian
Press.
It has also been reported that the GMs will continue to the discussion on head-shots in the hopes to allow for more consistency in the rule.
