Agent of socialization?

Why would family not be the most important agent of socialization?

coz it's limited to relatives. we spend almost 3/4 of the in school or outside the house. ^_^

Depends in the situation functionalism would state that if the family is not functioning another thing rises to replace it to maintain homeostasis.  Possible areas that can replace the family are the church, school, or in some cases the community.

Some people are not close with their family or have none.  I have a friend who has disowned her father and will not speak to him, her children don't even know him.  Family is the people who care for you... not neccessarily the people who share your bloodline.

Many people spend more time at work, with friends, or at school than with their families. Therefore co-workers, friends, teachers, and classmates have become more important agents of socialization than family members.
