Question:

Aggressive rummynose tetras?

I just bought 6 true rummynose tetras yesterday. They live in a 30 gallon tank with a pair of bolivian rams. I have one big rummynose tetra (think a female) and today when I woke up I saw it continually chasing the other smaller fish. They were schooling with each other yesterday but today they are all scattered because of the big rummynose tetra chasing them.

Is this normal behaviour?

Should I take out the bully?

I thought rummynose tetras were peaceful fish and schooled. By the looks of it, mine are definately aren't peacful with each other.

  1. You're likely seeing the female try to establish her dominance.  In Tetras, this isn't uncommon.  Females are larger, and the fish will look to the largest fish as the leader.  After a couple days, they'll have a set hierarchy and should resume normal schooling.

  2. I don't think that is normal behavior. Within a species, there are always different individuals. You may have an overy aggresive individual. If your tetras are new, it didn't chase the others yesterday because it was getting used to the new tank.

You should probably take out the aggressor.
