Question:

Agility with my Sibe?

I started my husky pup in puppy school when he was 4 months. Now he's almost 9 months and we're doing level one obedience. It's such a great experience.. he is normally the dog that the instructor will take to demonstrate because he's so food motivated and will normally does it right the first time.

In the classes they've introduced us to Agility. He's done the tunnel in many lengths and turns, and has done the A frame. He seems to really enjoy the agility as much as he enjoys the obedience (he really does love it) I plan on completing all the levels of obedience with him, and i'm wondering about the agility part.

Have many people had success with their sibes and agility? I don't plan on competing or anything like that.. i'm just wondering if it'll be a really good experience/bonding exercise for us to do and possibly respect me more then he already does? I have a wonderful relationship with him and it gets stronger everyday!

I may just end up doing all the levels of agility with him also.

any thoughts?

  2. If your dog is having fun and you are having fun then great..

Today so many people think all dogs respond the same way to the SAME things...That could not be farther from the truth.

Whether it  is Agility training, jogging or Dog whisperer techniques..All dogs respond uniquely differently to these things.

So glad you found something you and you pup enjoy.

Our rescues love to just  run freely in the acre fenced in backyard. We play frizbee and chase the ball with them.

Also inside the house they  all have huge soft puppy beds in our bed room..They  love and enjoy the daily walks each day and really enjoy going for a ride in the car with the windows down..

Then there is the basket of different toys in the middle of the living room they have fun pulling out and playing tug of war with or chase...

    Aren't critters wonderful!!!

ALL dogs are NOT created equal just like PEOPLE they are all different..Its fun to discover what makes them happy..

  3. I've played around with my Welsh Corgis, and almost all my mutts on an agility course and surprisingly its my Moroccan Street Dog that loves it the most. Though she listens like a brick... she mostly loves to run it the way she wants for fun... My corgis are so cute bouncing around on the teeters and trying to weave. There long bodies make it comical... My huge Cane Corso/Pitt mix will do everything but the weave poles. He gets to them and says "Heck no I am not going to look stupid doing those!" and walks away like its the silliest thing ever. Its a great thing for every breed, of every kind of dog, and there owner. It helps bonding, exercises the mind and body. I bet it would do wonders with a Sibe's energy. I dont own a Siberian Husky, but I at the course I frequent there is a great Sibe that does very well in agility. Other than him getting slightly distracted from time to time. He runs a tight race most days.

  4. I was involved in Agility (pre-AKC sanctioning) with my first obedience titled Siberian. Siberians LOVE this sport. The only problem is, they can get too "into" it and take off, and stop listening.

My dog would get ahead of me, miss a turn, and start doing laps around the agility area he was so excited...then he'd duck the boundary ropes and off he'd go. Unfortunately, the off-lead control issues that are so common with the breed raise their ugly head here, too.

Physically, it is the perfect sport for them (other than snow sports, of course :)...mentally, it's just too difficult to maintain control. This is why you won't see many Siberians in the top tiers of Agility competition.

There have, however, been many people who have put Agility titles -- even some MACH titles -- on their Siberians. But those are exceptional dogs.

I say go for it and have fun, but be aware that if you want to get serious about it, you will have to develop some serious off-lead control.

    Good luck!

ADD: I'll have to wait until I get home to watch chetco's videos...but I can already imagine what I'll see! ;)

  5. Agility is a great experience for any breed! There are lots of teams that do mixed breed hobbyist agility competitions. It is great bonding and exercise experience. My husky/ shepherd loves agility!
