Aging 30 plus but still amongst the Top-100 players list – Tennis Special (Part-II)
Melinda Czink
World number 94, Melinda Czink, belongs to Hungary and has been around the world of pro tennis for almost a decade. She played her first professional match way back in 2000 but couldn’t contest more than three matches in her first year.
However, she launched a full fledge career in the following year; played 50 matches and won 30 of them. It was a successful start for the blonde who turned 30 on October 22, this year. She has not seen a lot of success as far as the number of titles are
concerned; just one in her entire career.
However, the consistency in her performances throughout the year has not seen a dip. She cruised into the Top-40 category, two years ago; reached the 37th rank in the world and but was surrounded by niggling injuries that kept her out of play for quite a
long time.
Czink made a comeback in the previous season; registered a record of 35-16 and backed it up with another impressive run in the current season. She was on the rise at the AEGON Classic in Birmingham; trashed the first two competitors that included the third
seed superstar, Daniela Hantuchova, but could not overpower the Taiwanese 13th seed, Su-Wei Hsieh, in the following round that ended her dream of winning the second tournament of her career. She has ended the current season with a record of 32-26 and does
not want to quit at least for the foreseeable future.
Anabel Medina Garrigues
The Spanish superstar, Anabel Medina Garrigues, is listed amongst the Top-50 players in the world. She is the most consistent performer from the entire lot in her country and provides results when it is required.
She enjoyed a spell amongst the Top-20 players and had a career-high ranking of world number 16 until May 2009. Over the course of years in her professional career, the 5’6 tall Spaniard has won 11 singles WTA doubles titles and coupled them with 18 doubles
trophies. She has gathered a massive prize money of almost $5,000,000 in her entire career altogether and registered a decent record of 457-317 to date.
The current season for the Spaniard has not been great by any means. She lost 29 of her matches and gathered just 23 wins in the entire season. She was the 26th seed contestant at the Australian Open but could not succeed beyond the third round of the tournament
at Melbourne. A similar tragedy was witnessed in the second Grand Slam tournament of the year, the French Open, whereas in the Wimbledon Championships, she was reduced to tears in the second round upset at the hands of the qualifier.
The worst was yet to come. Garrigues lost in the opening round of the London Olympics and her misery was multiplied by another astonishing opening round upset at the US Open in New York. She managed to secure just two victories in the last six tournaments
of the season that sunk her ranking to world number 50 towards the year-end.
