Aging 30 plus but still amongst the Top-100 players list – Tennis Special (Part-III)
Lourdes Dominguez-Lino
The 31-year-old Spaniard, Lourdes Dominguez-Lino, regained momentum in the current season after a formidable display in the last year that forced her ranking to slip to the 79th spot in the world.
Just like her age-fellows, she began her professional career in 2000; started slowly but gathered moment in the year 2004. The good work was continued over the next two years as well and the 5’4 tall Spaniard reached her career-high ranking of world number
40 in the meantime.
It was expected that she will continue to grow and capture few more entertaining moments under her belt but the chronic injuries haunted her badly. However, she struck back after recovering completely by the start of 2010 and picked up 37 wins from 59 matches.
In the current season, she victimised 32 players from her prolific display but failed to add any more title to her tally. She has been in the pro-tennis for almost 12 years but lifted trophies on two different occurrences only. It is a disappointing stat
for someone who has been consistent throughout her career, neglecting some injury-forced downfalls. In the doubles tournaments, Lino has grabbed four titles that have helped her to accumulate $1,595,000 prize money.
Lino won just two matches in the four Grand Slams this year. She was knocked-out in the opening stage of the Australian Open; didn’t take part in the French Open and passed just the initial round of Wimbledon and the US Open. It has been a major disappointment
of her life that her performances in the big four tournaments hasn’t lived up to the expectations. She has the potential to reach at least the fourth round of the Major tournaments but has always slipped up terribly whenever the big stage has arrived.
Flavia Pennetta
The Italian superstar will turn 31-year-old in the coming February. She has been an asset to the world of tennis and her performances at the elitist stages of all tournaments are mesmerising. She was always amongst the elite category of player but the injury-prone
attribute that ignited in her health in the current season has slipped her ranking to world number 45.
Since the start of her career, the 30-year-old Italian has been one of the most prolific performers of the season. She has clinched nine trophies in her entire career to date and gathered 14 titles in the doubles category as well. The non-stop improvement
in her performance over the course of years has yielded her gigantic prize money of $6,300,000.
Pennetta registered three tremendous years in a row; registering 50 or more victories. She secured 50 victims in 2008 before improving the record to 58 in the following season. The hard work continued in 2010 as well when she powered down 51 of her opponents
and fall victim to just 23.
The Italian has also enjoyed a decent spell in the elite Top-10 category as well, retaining the 10th spot until June 2010. Since 2002, Pennetta has never been out of the Top-100 category in fact never ended a particular year out of Top-50 category for the
past eight seasons.
Moreover, the Italian veteran has also been the number one doubles player of the world; ending the spell in February last year.
