Agnieszka Radwanska beats Vera Zvonareva; catapults into quarterfinal – Rogers Cup 2011
Thursday was yet another black day for the top seeds at the Rogers Cup 2011, as this time, last year’s runner up Vera Zvonareva lost to the Polish Agnieszka Radwanska. The Pole won by dousing her Russian counterpart in a 64, 7-6(4)
win at the Rexall Centre in York University, Toronto, Canada in almost two hours of thrilling play.
The players did not hit an ace, but the 13th seeded Radwanska had a meticulous precision, committing zero double faults, while the third seeded Zvonareva had struck two foot faults and a line fault.
Luck was not on the Russian’s (Zvonareva) side. She not only had a poor serve, which won her only 37% of her total service points in the set but she was also unable to save the four break points on her serve though she managed
to convert three of ten opportunities to her advantage.
Mean while, the Pole with her well placed shots and strong ground strokes won 50% of her service points in the set and was able to save a grand 7 of 10 break points on her serve, along with breaking her opponent 4 times, hence,
winning a hundred percent of her break point.
Although, the Russian had a relatively better return than her serve, she was only able to bag 20 out of 40 return points, making it an average 40% win against Radwanska, who had 13% more points than Zvonareva in the total return
points of the set.
Radwanska won the set with 37 out of 67 points, which was a 55% win of her total service points in the set.
The second set was the longest as both the players wanted to defeat each other and so they kept rallying it out until they hit a tie break, Zvonareva lost the tie breaker as Radwanska took the lead of 7-4 in the tie breaker and
served the set.
Moreover, it was a close shave between the points of both the players, as such, that they both had 55% in their total service points along with, 45% in total return points but because Radwanska was able to save an extra break point
and had 2 fewer double faults, she won a point more in the total set points, making it a 51% win, against her opponent who attained 49% of her total set points.
Agnieszka Radwanska, the surprise titlist in Carlsbad eradicated Vera Zvonareva, who is currently ranked at world number 3 and managed to save a spot in the Quarter-final of the Rogers Cup.
The former world number 8 has had a great year sporting an impressive 28-12 win loss mar for the season. She will now be facing Czech Petra Kvitova in the quarter final.
