Agnieszka Radwanska bounces back to defeat Vera Zvonareva in 3rd RR match – WTA Championships 2011
It was a tad bit difficult for Agnieszka Radwanska to take down sixth seeded Russian Vera Zvonareva in the third round robin match of the TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships 2011.
After battling for two hours and twenty five minutes on indoor hard courts of the Sinan Erdem Dome in Istanbul, Turkey, Pole Radwanska bounced back from a set down to secure a victory of 1-6, 6-2, 7-5 against the sixth seeded Russian
on Thursday the 27th of October 2011.
Eighth seeded Radwanska was unable to make a return against Zvonareva in the initial set and only managed to score a pathetic 26 percent of total return points won against Zvonareva’s 62 percent. Moreover, the Pole was not able
to save three out of the four breakpoints and was neither able to avail any breakpoints.
Mean while, Zvonareva had accomplished a grandiose 92 percent of first service points won and with a laser precision did not commit any double faults. The Russian had achieved twice as many total set points as her adversary in
the opening set.
The first set of the match was kicked off by Radwanska, who was a debutant at this event and she opened the scoreboard with a hold of serve at 1-0. However, in the third game the Pole double faulted and endorsed a breakpoint to
Zvonareva. The Russian capitalized on the break and with a hold of serve took a mini lead of 3-1 by the end of the fourth game.
The first set proved extremely lucky for Zvonareva as she further went on to capitalize on another break in the fifth game. Eventually in the seventh game Radwanska erred and gifted away the opening set.
Amidst the second set a turn of events took place and Radwanska made a comeback as this time she capitalized on an early break and took a mini lead. Nevertheless, Zvonareva closed in on the gap by the fourth game by breaking back.
Nevertheless, Radwanska eventually benefitted from two more breaks and bagged the opening set by restricting her adversary to only two games.
By the end of the first two sets each player had bagged a set and commencing the third set was Zvonareva. The challengers traded breaks in the first two sets and from there onwards the match progressed on even terms. The rivals
exchanged breaks for another two times and the score eventually tied at 5-5 by the tenth game.
However, grave fortune enveloped Zvonareva as she had recuperated and had gotten to a double match point at 5-3, 5-4 but missed down-the-lines on both and in the eleventh she double faulted on her serve and gifted away a pivotal
break to Radwanska.
In the end, Radwanska quickly sealed her victory of the set and the match. Next up for the Pole is Petra Kvitova.
