Agnieszka Radwanska demolished Mona Barthel in the second round- Rogers Cup 2012
Second seed, Agnieszka Radwanska, demolished the German contender, Mona Barthel, with a final sets score of 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(5), in the second round of the Montreal Masters, a hard court tennis championship in Toronto, Canada,
on Thursday afternoon.
Barthel was off to a flying start in the opening set and jolted down a 6-4 score line to claim the opening set. She laboured hard to sustain her momentum and exhibited an agile performance, indicating her confidence to secure
a lead in the match.
In the second set, the second seeded Pole picked up impetus and was finally able to secure a 6-3 win. She struck a couple of aces in the set as compared to the German professional. However, she was able to claim one out of
three break point on Barthel’s serves to level the match at 1-1.
The third set proved to be very challenging for the German, as she tried to nudge every opportunity in order to win the match. Despite of her endless struggle she lost the set to Radwanska by 7-6(5). She exhibited a relatively
firmer footwork and secured a lead of 3-2 at the start of the set. Later, lost focus and made series of critical errors, giving world number three a chance to lead by 3-4.
A series of breakpoints was witnessed from both sides, as the contestants struggled hard to take the upper hand, eventually levelling the scores to 4-all. Nevertheless, the 37th ranked German started
to lose her confidence but both competitors continued to break each other’s serve to make it 6-6. This called for a tiebreaker round, resulting in Radwanska’s victory at 7-6(5).
The Polish tennis ace is one of the top contenders for the Rogers Cup this year. Radwanska will be meeting Chanelle Scheepers in the third round. The only competition she faces is the reigning world number one Victoria Azarenka,
who will not meet her until the title match.
Her performance at the London Olympics was considerably disappointing which also gave Maria Sharapova a lead in the ATP World Tour rankings. She needs to gear up for her future in the tournament if she intends to continue
to sustain her present rank before U.S Open.
