Agnieszka Radwanska disposes Petra Kvitova to kick-off at Istanbul – WTA Championships 2012
In the curtain raiser at Women Tennis Association Masters Championship, the fourth ranked Pole star, Agnieszka Radwanska, outfoxed the 22-year-old Czech athlete, Petra Kvitova, in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. She accomplished the goal
in an hour and 23 minutes and registered her first head-to-head victory against Kvitova in the fourth meeting.
Radwanska held her serve to love to begin with and had her opponent in all sorts of troubles in the following game. The sixth ranked Czech couldn’t handle the pressure and handed over the early breakpoint to her rival. She was
extremely close on bringing the score back on serves but couldn’t exploit an opportunity in the third game that allowed a lead of 3-0 to Radwanska.
Kvitova fought back into the contest with three successive games to her name. She broke serve in the fifth game and that helped her to tie the scores at 3-3. However, the following three games yielded absolutely nothing for her
as she lost a breakthrough that helped the 23-year-old Pole to take away the opening set.
Both players swapped breakpoints at the start of the second phase before the Pole sneaked another breakthrough and protected it with a serve hold. The Czech failed to hold serve for the rest of the contest whilst Radwanska did
in the eighth game to close the encounter in her favour.
In an interview at the end of the match, Radwanska stated, “I'm just very happy about my performance. The first match is always tough and adjusting to a new surface is never easy, but I was playing really well from the beginning
to the end of the match.”
She further added, “It was still a little bit up and down today. There were a lot of breaks of serve in the match - the serve should be a big weapon, and it wasn't in this match! But I just stayed focused and I'm happy I closed
this match out in two sets.” The Pole unleashed her desired stage of exit at Istanbul. She said, “I hope this year I can make the semi-finals, at least.”
Kvitova wasn’t experiencing a good run of form prior to the tournament, hence, took the defeat graciously. There was no racquet tantrum in the locker room as the elegant Czech stated, “No, that's not my style.” It must be difficult
for her to know that the title is running away. However, there is still time and chance to bounce back.
