Agnieszka Radwanska dumps Camila Giorgi to reach the quarter-finals – Wimbledon Championships 2012
With the top seed hot favourite, Maria Sharapova, falling out of the fourth round draw on Monday afternoon, the world number three, Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland, kept cruising her way to the quarter-final rounds of the Wimbledon Championships. She out muscled the 145th ranked surprise contender from Italy, Camila Giorgi, comprehensively in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, to earn a berth in the final-eight of the Grand Slam tournament in London, England.
It was the first encounter between these contestants and a fairly one-sided one as well, with the third seed pole dominating for most of the time. Giorgi had a sublime run at the All England Club this season, beating all the odds to reach the fourth round of the Grand Slam event. She came under the lime light when she toppled the 16th seeded Italian tennis ace, Flavia Pennetta, in straight sets in the opening round of Wimbledon. She then hunted down the 20th seed Russian veteran, Nadia Petrova, in the third round to book a date with the world number three, Radwanska. Giorgi couldn’t repeat her heroics in the fourth round clash against the Pole and was manhandled by Radwanska to end her dream run at the All England Club.
23-year-old Radwanska registered her 42nd victory of the running season with utmost authority and moved a step closer to her first Grand Slam title. Her triumph was greatly assisted by Giorgi’s error-ridden game play. The Italian coughed a total of 30 unforced errors, including 10 extremely taxing double faults to finish on the losing side in the end. The third seed Pole won 29 out of 41 first serve points and broke the Italian serve five out of 10 times en route to victory. Giorgi registered merely one out of three break points in the entire matchup but belted 28 winners as compared to Radwanska’s 11.
Up next for the world number three is the 17th seeded Russian contender, Maria Kirilenko, in the quarter-final round of the Wimbledon Championships on Tuesday.
"We played a couple times against each other, but I think never on grass," Radwanska said about her upcoming clash against Kirilenko. "Of course, she's a very consistent player. I have to play good tennis because this is the quarterfinals - everybody is playing very well. I think it's gonna be another big challenge."
Radwanska has never gone past the quarter-final round of a Grand Slam event in her career but a relatively lower-ranked opponent in the round of eight can provide her a golden opportunity to advance into the semis of a Major for the first time.
