Agnieszka Radwanska eyeing for Grand Slam glory at the US Open: (Part One) – Tennis Special
Polish number one, Agnieszka Radwanska, is bidding for her maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open, last of the major tennis tournaments held in Queens, New York City.
After displaying dismal performance at the WTA Championships in Istanbul last year, Radwanska changed her strategy before entering her first tournament this circuit at the Apia International Sydney. She saw success on clay and
hard court surfaces this season as she clicked title in Brussels, Miami and Dubai before starting her US Open campaign.
The Ultra-fit Pole entered as the world number eight and devastated her sister, Urszula, with double breadsticks in her opening round match in Sydney. The Pole maintained her form and tumbled Germany’s Andrea Petkovic before rallying
past the top seeded Dane, Caroline Wozniacki. She bowed out to the Belarusian number one, Victoria Azarenka, in the final four.
The 23-year-old carried her rhythm at the Australian Open, first of the four Grand Slam event held on the hard courts, and made an impressive final eight run. She again bowed out to the unstoppable Belarusian in troublesome three
sets.
Radwanska cruised to another semi-final appearance at the Qatar Ladies Open where she was ousted by the top seeded Belarusian again. However, she got the breakthrough in the following tournament in Dubai where she stomped over
the likes of Sabine Lisicki and Jelena Jankovic before setting up a final date with the German star, Julia Goerges. The Pole eased past the underdog and captured her first year-to-date title on hard courts of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.
Her superb run of form continued at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells where she secured a quarter-final berth. However, she lost to Azarenka once again with a bagel. Radwanska’s carried her winning ways at the Sony Ericsson
Open, a WTA Premier event held on the hard courts in Miami. She crippled her entire rivals including the former world number one, Venus Williams, seventh seeded Marion Bartoli and second seeded Maria Sharapova in straight sets to capture her second year-to-date
title.
"It's a great feeling to win a tournament like Miami - it's the biggest one after the Grand Slams," Radwanska was quoted after lifting the crystalware. "You have to play six very good matches to win this tournament. And today I
was playing really well from the beginning until the end - everything was working, I couldn't complain about anything."
The gorgeous Russian was quoted after losing the match in the title-round:
"I thought she played extremely well today, was very consistent, got that extra ball back and I made that extra mistake. She didn't give me many errors.”
All in all, Radwanska lost to only one tennis star, Azarenka, during her hard court season this circuit. She has displayed top class performance against every contestant and secured at least a quarter-final berth in almost every
hard court tournament she entered.
