Agnieszka Radwanska eyeing for Grand Slam glory at the US Open – Tennis Special: Part Two
Polish top, Agnieszka Radwanska, outshined her opponents on clay and grass after dominating the hard court season. She captured a crystalware on dirt and made a final showdown at the most prestigious grass court tournament held
in London.
The ultra-fit Pole high-spiritedly started her clay court drive at the Stuttgart Premier-level tournament and crushed the Hungarian qualifier, Greta Arn, in straight sets to reach quarters. She battled past the former French Open
champion, Li Na, in three sets before crashing out to Victoria Azarenka again in the final four.
Radwanska continued playing its original game at the Mutua Madrid Open, a blue clay court tournament held in Spain, and breezed past her rivals for another semi-final run. She devastated the Italian star, Sara Errani, with a bagel
and a breadstick en route to semis. Apart from edging out against the world number one Azarenka for the sixth straight time this year, the Pole climbed to number three at the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Rankings.
The Polish star made a drastic entry at the Internazionali BNL D’Italia the following week. She exited to Czech Republic’s Petra Cetkovska from the opening round in Rome but made a spectacular reply in the next tournament, Brussels
Open, she entered. Radwanska eased past her entire rivals without losing a set, subsequently capturing her maiden clay court title this circuit. She slew the Romanian number one, Simona Halep, with a bagel in the title-round.
In the French Open, second of the four Grand Slam events held in Paris, Radwanska dumped the former world number one, Venus Williams, but was underplayed by 26th seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova in the third round.
Radwanska started her grass court season with disappointment at the AEGON International in Eastbourne as she lost to Bulgaria’s Tsvetana Pironkova in the opening round.
However, she made her best Grand Slam appearance at the Wimbledon Championships, third of the four Grand Slam events, before starting her US Open campaign. The high flying Pole cruised into the final showdown before bowing out
to the American number one, Serena Williams, in a three-set thriller.
Radwanska was quoted in a court-side interview after securing a title-round berth at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club:
"I had the opportunity to win, but it just wasn't my day. But I'm just very happy to be here in the final. I have great memories from here and from 2005 when I won junior Wimbledon. I think I played some great matches here and
the crowd gave me so much support. I will try again next year."
The American icon, Williams, praised her performance and skills after the match as she stated, "Aga was really tough. She played so well - she's had such a great career and she's so young, you should give her another round of applause."
Radwanska is now looking to capture his maiden Grand Slam title at the Flushing Meadows in Corona Park.
