Agnieszka Radwanska falls to Petra Cetkovska in the second round – Internazionali BNL d’Italia 2012
A huge upset was witnessed on Wednesday when the 28th ranked Czech contender, Petra Cetkovska, threw away the world number three, Agnieszka Radwanska, in the second round battle of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia. The
unseeded Czech wrapped up her emphatic victory in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, to dispose of the third seed pole out of the coveted clay court event in Rome, Italy.
The see-saw battle continued for two hours and 26 minutes before Radwanska finally submitted in the third set. The 27-year-old Czech veteran sustained her clean sheet over the belligerent world number three, beating her on the
fourth successive occasion to lead 4-0 in the head-to-head combats. She last defeated Radwanska in 2011 New Haven, USA and replicated the similar sort of performance on Wednesday afternoon to register a major upset in the tournament.
Radwanska received an early blow in the contest when her opponent blasted her way to clinch the opening set comprehensively. The world number three got back on track in the following set and manoeuvred her way to level the match
score at 1-1. Another huge momentum swing was seen in the decisive set and it was the sheer aggression of Cetkovska which drove the third seed Pole out of the competition with authority.
"I like to play with her. She plays really intelligently," Cetkovska said. "I just played a great match today. I didn't make too many mistakes - she didn't do too many either. Maybe there were just some important moments I did
better. The times I beat her when she was No.11 or No.12, she was the same great player, for me she hasn't changed much. All of our matches are very interesting and very close - both of us could win, until now it's me. I don't know how it will be next time."
Cetkovska delivered her first serve with an amazing precision of 73 per cent and secured 44 out of 69 points on it to come out as the deserving winner. She suffered five serve breaks from the world number three but replied with
eight out of 20 cracking break points to turn the tables on the superior ranked pole opponent.
Up next for the unseeded Czech is the Italian tennis veteran, Flavia Pennetta, in the third round draw of the Rome Masters. Pennetta had no troubles in dumping the American qualifier, Sloane Stephens, 6-2, 6-3, in the second round
of the tournament on Wednesday.
