Agnieszka Radwanska gets rid of Angelique Kerber in 2nd round – Toray Pan Pacific Open 2011
Ninth seeded Agnieszka Radwanska comfortably fended off qualifier Angelique Kerber in the second draw of the Toray Pan Pacific Open 2011. The two duelled on outdoor hard courts at Ariake Colosseum, Tokyo, Japan. Ninth seeded Pole
won by jumping back from a set down with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 against German Kerber on Tuesday the 27th of September.
The Pole opted to serve first as she was the victor of the service toss. The players were easily able to hold their respective serves in the initial two games but in the third game Radwanska was broken, capitalizing on the early
break, Kerber then went on to holding her serve to take a mini lead of 3-1.
During the following four games the players rallied long and hard, matching a toe for a toe they held their service games on alternate games to square off the score at 5-3. Kerber was still leading the game with a break and game
up. As the fourteenth seeded Pole served, she first faulted and then her backhand swing netted and she lost the game point to Kerber.
Serving second was Kerber, who was known for upsets during the US Open and with an added boost to her performance as served for the opening game, she lost her serve and her demeanour. Mean while, Radwanska wanted to get her foot
in the door by winning this set and she got off to a great start by benefiting from an early break and then holding her serve, she was leading the score board with a 2-0.
The players then held serve for the following two games and in the fifth and sixth game they broke each other back-to-back but Radwanska was still a break and game up, leading with a 4-2. During the last three games Radwanska broke
Kerber for the last time to bag a 6-3 victory.
By the end of the first two sets the players had bagged a set apiece and opening the decisive set was the ninth seeded Pole, who was able to win her service game. However, in the following two games the players broke each other
back-to-back and by the third game the score was balanced at 2-2.
From there onwards there was no holding back by Radwanska as she powered through the remaining of the set, while breaking her adversary once, she clogged the third set and was able to secure a berth in the third round of the event.
