Agnieszka Radwanska hammers Angelique Kerber on her way to the final – Toray Pan Pacific Open 2012
World number three, Agnieszka Radwanska, hammered away the sixth seed German, Angelique Kerber, in the semi-final of the Toray Pan Pacific Open to confirm the successive appearance in the final of the tournament. She trashed her
opponent to a double breadstick 6-1, 6-1.
Kerber couldn’t even survive an hour at the hard courts of Tokyo against the third seed Pole. She had an opportunity to level the head-to-head scores at 3-3 but fell to a trail of 2-4 after a terrific onslaught from her rival.
It looked like a mere practice session for the 23-year-old Pole who smashed 20 winners and committed just four unforced errors on her way to a shot at the successful title defence.
Radwanska began the show with a serve hold and pounded her opponent to win a breakpoint in the following game. An exchange of breakpoints didn’t help the 24-year-old German as she was still trailing by a huge trail of 1-3. A serve
hold from the Pole star made it 4-1 in her favour. Nothing was going right for the left-handed German who surrendered in just the seventh game of the match.
A serve hold at both ends commenced the second set proceedings. However, a continuous five games unbeaten run from Radwanska ended the encounter in quick succession. She won three breakpoints in the second set to confirm her place
in the final.
Talking about her rival, Radwanska said, “We've played a couple of times before and it has always been tough, and even though today was 61 61 it was tough as well, and I had to run a lot. She's a very smart player and mixes up
a lot of shots, so I had to stay focused from beginning to end. I'm very happy I could play my best today."
Commenting about her fellow finalist, the Pole said, “Nadia has been playing great tennis the whole week. First of all I'm very, very happy I could reach the final and fight for the title again. I'll try my best - it's the final,
the most important match of the week."
Agnieszka Radwanska takes on Nadia Petrova in the final showdown on Saturday.
