Agnieszka Radwanska is the top seed at Apia International Sydney 2013 – Tennis News
Polish number one, Agnieszka Radwanska, will lead the field at the Apia International Sydney 2013, a WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier event taking place from 6th to 12th January in Sydney, Australia.
The former world number two, Radwanska is the highest ranked player at the Sydney Premier event. She has enjoyed great success in her 2012’s campaign and is looking forward to carry her rhythm in the upcoming season.
However, the Pole will have to take on three Grand Slam Champions and many top stars to grab the title. The Asian number one who is also the 2011 French Open champion, Li Na, is the fourth seed here. The 2011 Wimbledon Champion, Petra Kvitova, is seeded fifth while the 2011 US Open champion, Samantha Stosur, is the sixth seed at this Australian Open warm-up tournament.
The Australian number one, who recently claimed her third Newcombe medal, displayed superb tennis in 2012 as well.
Stosur reflected of her participation at the Apia International Sydney, "Receiving the Newcombe Medal for the third time is a great honour and it provides great motivation heading into the next few weeks of training as I prepare to face a tough field of top 10 players in Sydney."
The former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki, who lifted her game near the end of 2012, is also enlisted in Sydney’s line-up.
Currently ranked fourth in the WTA Premier Rankings, Radwanska enjoyed her career best season in 2012. She captured three titles and secured two final berths including a final showdown at the Wimbledon Championships (lost to sixth seeded Serena Williams). The Pole claimed her first crown at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships where she outshined Julia Goerges in straight sets in the title-round.
The 23-year-old maintained her intensity in the following tournament she entered. The Pole went berserk at the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami where she cruised to the final round without losing a set. Radwanska stunned second seed Maria Sharapova in straight sets to lift the title.
Her third title came at the Brussels Open, a WTA Premier event taking place in Belgium. She crushed her entire opponents in straight sets before grabbing the title. In her final battle, Radwanska dumped Simona Halep with ease.
