Agnieszka Radwanska knocks out Li Na in quarter-final – Wimbledon Championships 2013
Polish star, Agnieszka Radwanska, got the better of the sixth seed, Li Na, in a three-set nail-biter at the Wimbledon Championships 2013 on Tuesday.
She summed up a 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-2 victory against the Chinese number one to secure a place in the final four at this prestigious grass court event being held in London, United Kingdom.
Seeded fourth in this event, Radwanska triumphed over the Asian number one in their 11th encounter. With this victory, the Pole avenged her quarter-final loss at the Australian Open earlier this season and lowered trail in the head-to-head series by 5-6
against the 31-year-old.
The in-form Pole stated in a courtside interview after earning the limelight, “We've played so many times before, but that match was really, really good, on a really high level. From the first point to the last point it was a really great battle. She was
playing very well today. And I'm even double happy I could beat her playing very good tennis. I think this was the match where we proved Top 10 players are playing really good matches.”
Radwanska made a strong start in this match. After exchanging two serve breaks, the Pole led the set to a tie-breaker. She edged past Li in it and consequently pulled out the opener with a 7-6(5) score line.
The world number six, Li, failed to find her rhythm in the start of the following set. She suffered the first blow in the third game and jumped to a 3-1 lead. However, the Chinese stayed focused and reeled off last four games, eventually grabbing the equaliser
with a 6-4 win.
The 24-year-old re-gained her strength in the deciding set. She got the coveted break early in the set and took the initial lead. Radwanska cashed another break chance in the fifth game and leaped to a 5-1 lead. Despite squandering two match points afterwards,
the Pole held her serve once again and sealed the decider by winning six games to two.
The highest ranked player left in this event, Radwanska, will take on the German star, Sabine Lisicki, in the semi-finals.
Lisicki, who stunned the top seeded Serena Williams in the fourth round, reflected about her match against the pole, “Agnieszka Radwanska plays a very smart game. She moves well around the court. She also was in the final last year, so she has a lot of confidence
with that.”
The 23rd seed cruised past Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi in straight sets to set-up this match. She lost her serve once en route to 6-3, 6-3 rout of the Estonian.
