Agnieszka Radwanska magical run at the Wimbledon Championships 2012 – Tennis Special
Polish number one, Agnieszka Radwanska, enjoyed a spectacular run at the Wimbledon Championships 2012, third of the four Grand Slam events held in London, after displaying exceptional abilities from her arsenal of skills. She cruised into the final showdown
before bowing out to the former world number one, Serena Williams, in a three set thriller.
After lifting titles at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, Sony Ericsson Open and Brussels Open this circuit, Radwanska started her campaign with poise at the grass court season. She was seeded top at the AEGON International in Eastbourne but crashed
out from the opening round at the hands of Bulgaria’s Tsvetana Pironkova. However, the Pole re-gained her strength and re-focused before entering as third seed at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.
The 23-year-old convincingly stepped into the British courts and stomped over Slovakia’s Magdalena Rybarikova in straight sets in the opening round. Despite failing to save all three breakpoints she came across, Radwanska broke her rival’s serve six times
to earn the glory.
She maintained consistency in her game and crippled the Russian star, Elena Vesnina, with a breadstick in the follow-up round. The Pole blocked both breakpoints she faced and capitalised on four out of seven break chances to pull out the victory with a 6-2,
6-1 score line.
Radwanska perfected her game against the British star, Heather Watson, in the third round. She capitalised on five out of six break chances to crush the local contender with a bagel.
In the pre-quarters, the Pole got the better of the Italian qualifier, Camila Giorgi, in straight sets before setting up a date with 17th seeded Maria Kirilenko. She lost her first set against the Russian star but fired five aces to steal the
show. She was broken four times but cashed in six out of 18 break chances to book a spot in the semi-finals where the German number one Angelique Kerber was waiting for her.
The ultra-fit Pole eased past Kerber in straight sets and swiftly set up a date with the American number one, Williams, in the title-round. She cashed in both break opportunities and pulled out the equaliser. However, Radwanska displayed dismal performance
again in the final set and eventually bowed out to the American icon.
"I had the opportunity to win, but it just wasn't my day," Radwanska was quoted after displaying her awe-inspiring skills in the title-round. "But I'm just very happy to be here in the final. I have great memories from here and from 2005 when I won junior
Wimbledon. I think I played some great matches here and the crowd gave me so much support. I will try again next year."
The fifth time Wimbledon Champion, Williams also praised the Poll:
"Aga was really tough. She played so well - she's had such a great career and she's so young, you should give her another round of applause."
Radwanska may have lost the final battle but her superb skills were praised by everyone. She also climbed to the number two rank at the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Rankings.
