Agnieszka Radwanska moves past Andrea Petkovic into the final four – Rogers Cup 2011
Rogers Cup 2011, categorized as Premier 5 event, continued on Friday, 12th August, with women’s single quarter-final matches at the Rexall Centre, Toronto. Playing their 4th head to head match, Agnieszka Radwanska
stormed her quarter-final run against the German Andrea Petkovic in straight sets. The 22-year-old world No.12 took one hour and 41 minutes to win her semi-final seat disintegrating the German world No.10.
Formerly the two had met twice in the Toray Pan Pacific Open and then once later at the Mercury Insurance Open. The 22-year-old emerged victorious in all four matches. The Most Impressive Newcomer of the WTA Tour, the Polish has
already won 5 career titles at this young age.
Challenging the 22-year-old was the world No.10, Andrea Petkovic, the Bosnian born German. The top ranked WTA star was blown out of her mind when she was overpowered once again by the Polish, and lost another chance of her revenge
on the previous beatings. Although the German had been practicing mostly on hard-court circuits, she still could not get the hold of the vicious 22-year-old.
Starting off with the quarter-final, the Polish 22-year-old served to open the first set rolling the scorecards 1-0. Breaking off the German early, Radwanska won herself another game leading 2-0. Further extending her lead to
3-0 in the game 3, the Polish stood firm with a 3 game safety mark.
With 3 games down, Petkovic came back up strong to level the scores breaking her opponent in game five and leveling the score in the sixth, 3-3. The scores equaled for the second time in the set with Radwanska serving next. Taking
her chances with close liner shots, the Polish World No.12 took away game 9. Breaking Petkovic in the finisher game of the first set, Radwanska bagged the first set winning 6-4.
Although the second set came with several opportunities for the Polish to break the German, however, the one breakpoint in game 4 did just perfect. The Polish once again kicked off the set serving first and winning the first set.
The world No.10 soon got on level terms once again, however, her 22-year-old challenger took away the next game. Radwanska won her first breakpoint of the second set winning game 4 on Petkovic’s serve.
Heading on to a 4-1 lead in the next game, Radwanska stood strong with another victory in her hand. Eventually, winning 2 out of the next four games, the Polish took away the set 6-3, and the match 6-4, 6-3 making her room in the
quarter-final round of the Rogers Cup 2011.
The 22-year-old sensation would now try her luck playing the semi-final against the Aussie world No.11, Samantha Stosur.
