Agnieszka Radwanska needs Montreal title to claim the world number one spot – Tennis News
Second seed Pole contender, Agnieszka Radwanska is the most favourite contender to win the Montreal Maters, hard court tennis championship in Canada. The Polish tennis ace hopes that she can win the tournament and claim the
world number one rank. Her victory at the Rogers Cup can surely give a good backing for the US Open, scheduled to take place in the last week of August.
Due to the absence of the powerhouses of the tennis from the tournament, Serena Williams, Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova, the chances for the world number three increases considerably as she is the only top seed contesting.
The Pole contender received a bye in the first round and outplayed the German, Mona Barthel, in the second round, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(5).
In an interview after the match, she told the media, "The first match cost me a lot of power. It was very hot conditions out there. Anyway, of course, she had the same situation. She was just playing too good. Li Na was just
playing unbelievable tennis today. I just hope ... I will have more opportunity, you know, to be number one," said Radwanska. "I'm going to fight for that every week."
She will compete against the 41st ranked South African, Chanelle Scheepers in the third round of the tournament. Earlier, Radwanska secure a lead of 2-love against the South African.
Radwanska needs to have a tight check over her unforced errors in the upcoming matches to continue her way to the world number one spot. Her rankings after the London Olympics have fallen and she desperately needs to bag
home this title to reclaim glory.
The Polish tennis ace will have to keep a more pro active and agile performance throughout the remaining tournament. She needs to develop confidence in her skills in order to reach to the number one spot. Her win at the Montreal
Master will ultimately benefit her for the upcoming tournament, to mark an emphatic end to her current year’s end.
