Agnieszka Radwanska ousts Jelena Jankovic in the third round – US Open 2012
Finalist of the Wimbledon Championship 2012, Agnieszka Radwanska, battled past the Serbian tennis ace, Jelena Jankovic, in the third round of the US Open held on the hard courts of Flushing Meadows Park in New York, United
States. Being a hot favourite at the Grand Slam this year, the Polish contender defeated her rival in straight set, 6-3, 7-5, on Saturday.
In a post match press conference, Radwanska told the reports, “Today [Saturday] was really, really hot and humid and also windy. It was tough. But I came prepared for that. I was practising here before the match and every
day was like that.”
She further added, “I'm trying to use the ice at the first changeover and trying to stay calm and take the shade as well as much as possible. I was feeling like I was melting there. I survived the match. In the second set,
I was just better for a couple of points.”
Seeded second, Radwanska picked an exceptional game plan in the initial set and the score line swiftly mounted to mark her 3-1 lead. The former world number one, Jankovic, tried her utmost to upset the superior ranked rival
but was never able to level the scores in the opener. The Pole number one very confidently dominated the latter half of the set and registered a 6-3 score line to get 1-0 in the match.
The second set proved to be a tough trail for both the contenders, as they desperately battled to bag away the victory. The 27-year-old Serbian did not let her earlier defeat overshadow her buoyancy and she repeatedly squared
the scores down to move on even terms with her opponent. This resulted in ending the set with a tie-break and the Polish tennis star devastated Jankovic, rallying to the front line with 7-5 win.
The 30th seeded, Jankovic had a comparatively better first serve accuracy percentage of 67, but only managed to snatch 18 of 35 points in the match. On the other hand, Radwanska attained 28 of 43 points
on her first serve and pocketed six of the seven serve breaks.
The 23-year-old world number two takes a lead by 3-1 in the head-to-head encounter after the Grand Slam. Earlier this year, Radwanska sidelined the Serbian professional in the semi-finals at the Dubai Duty Free Championships,
6-2, 2-6, 6-0.
In the subsequently round, the Pole will contest against the Italian veteran Roberta Vinci, who battled past Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova.
