Agnieszka Radwanska ousts Shuai Zhang in round two – China Open 2012
World number three, Agnieszka Radwanska, didn’t have to break a sweat against the 143rd ranked Chinese wildcard entrant, Shuai Zhang, on Tuesday. She registered straight sets score line of 6-2, 6-3 and booked a spot
in the third round of the China Open at Beijing.
Radwanska started off in a nervy fashion but regrouped quickly to hold serve and deny her opponent from taking an early lead. The 23-year-old Chinese fought hard for her first serve hold as well. Both players settled into the atmosphere
and capitalized on their serves to push the scores further.
It was the 23-year-old Pole who opened up the set with a successful breakthrough in the sixth game that gave her a lead of 4-2. She made no mistake in ousting her competitor in the following game and pushed the scores to 5-2.
Suddenly, the situation turned around in favour of the Pole and she grabbed another breakpoint to power down her opponent in the first phase of the match. It wasn’t a kind of start that the local professional was looking to but
she wasn’t a match to the onslaught of her competitor.
Zhang needed a good start to the second set. She got one when the silly unforced error from the Pole allowed her to take a lead of 2-1. She protected the breakthrough with a serve hold and stretched the gap to 3-1. However, the
comeback was expected from the Pole and she didn’t take long in recovering from the dismal situation; broke serve in the sixth game that equalized the scores at 3-3.
Radwanska squandered few opportunities in the eighth game but that didn’t make a difference in the end as she won a breakpoint to take a lead of 5-3. She made no mistake in rounding off the proceedings in the following game; lost
no point and advanced into the third round.
Agnieszka Radwanska has another easy draw in the third round; plays Lourdes Dominguez Lino who came all the way from the qualifying stage and defeated the fellow qualifier, the number one Briton Laura Robson, earlier in the day.
