Agnieszka Radwanska overthrows Venus Williams in the second round – French Open 2012
Another huge upset was witnessed on the clay courts of Roland Garros, as the former Grand Slam champion, Venus Williams, crashed out of the French Open in the second round brawl on Wednesday. The 31-year-old American veteran was
devastated by the reigning world number three, Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland, in straight sets, 2-6, 3-6, to fell out of the star-studded clay court event in Paris, France.
Venus made her comeback to the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) circuit earlier this year and a lot better performance was expected from her at her Roland Garros campaign. She was rated among the hot favourites for winning her
eighth Grand Slam title but it was the third seed Pole contender who maligned all her hopes in the second round battle. Venus posted a below par performance according to her high standards and could barely win five games in the entire matchup to finish on
the losing side in the end.
No doubt Radwanska was among the strongest contenders for the Roland Garros title but no one expected her manhandling Venus in such dominating manner. The Pole number one had limited difficulties in turning the tables on the former
world number one player and cruised through the two sets with the utmost ease to come out as the winner. She was greatly assisted by Venus’ error-ridden game play, as the American veteran coughed a total of 33 unforced errors to propel Radwanska to victory.
"I felt like I played. That pretty much sums it up," Williams said afterwards. "You know, this tournament was all about getting to the Olympics for me, as I have said a couple million times. If that happens for me, and I think
the chances are good, then I come out a victor. That's why I was here at Roland Garros. I have to say, though, that she played really well today. She chased down a lot of shots, and it's important to put the ball in the court, especially on this surface. Unfortunately
I wasn't my best today, but all the credit to her."
Radwanska will next face the former French Open champion, Svetlana Kuznetsova, in the third round.
