Agnieszka Radwanska overwhelms Simona Halep to lift the title – Brussels Open 2012
Reigning world number four, Agnieszka Radwanska, carried on her sublime run of form and bagged her third WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) championship title this season by defeating the Romanian tennis sensation, Simona Halep,
on Saturday. The top seed Pole overcame the early resistance posed by Halep comprehensively and wrapped up her emphatic victory in straight sets, 7-5, 6-0.
It was the second time that Halep has suffered an agonising defeat at the hands of Radwanska, who now leads 2-0 in the head-to-head series. The 23-year-old top seed exhibited another display of sheer class and domination to power
down her young opponent in a convincing manner. With the only clay court Grand Slam event, Roland Garros French Open, about to begin in a couple of days, a title win in Brussels will certainly boost up Radwanska’s confidence to a whole new level. The belligerent
world number three is riding a 36-7 winning record for the season and is among the hot favourites for winning the mega event in Paris next week.
Radwanska took some time to get her eye in the game and once she found her winning groove, she was absolutely unplayable. Halep posed some early resistance in the match, registering three serve breaks in the opening set but couldn’t
retrain her opponent from clinching the set at 7-5. The third ranked Pole exploded her way in the following set, breaking the Romanian in every single serve game and rocketing away to victory with a bagel, 6-0.
"On clay I think I need longer to warm up, not just the five minutes before the match," Radwanska. "At the end I won nine games in a row - it was a good comeback, I think. And it's always great to win a tournament. I'm happy to
get some good preparation in ahead of the French Open."
Halep is yet to win her maiden WTA title and the Brussels final was a perfect opportunity for her to end her drought. She couldn’t make much of that chance and remained title-less in the end.
"I had some chances in the first set on my serve and I didn't take them," Halep said. "But it was my first Premier final and I'm really happy for it. I improved a lot this week and had some good wins against some tough players.
I really like it here in Brussels and I want to come back."
Radwanska will now focus her concentration on the year’s second Grand Slam event in Paris, France and will try to carry on her winning roll on the clay courts of Roland Garros.
