Agnieszka Radwanska signs up for the ASB Classic 2013 –Tennis News
World number four, Agnieszka Radwanska, will become the second player in the history of the ASB Classic tournament to take part in the event being the Top-5 player. The 23-year-old Pole will be the top seeded contestant and most
likely to grab the title in Auckland. However, the likes of the 26th ranked Chinese Jie Zheng and the 18th ranked German superstar Julia Goerges will be two contenders also bidding for the title. Zheng being the defending champion will
give everything to save all points to commence the season at a good note.
The New Tournament Director Karl Budge stated, “Agnieszka started the year at no.8 in the world and by June she’d won three more titles in Dubai, Miami and Brussels, reached the final of Wimbledon and jumped to no.2 in the world.
That’s a pretty impressive six months.” He further added, “Radwanska’s entry in the ASB Classic continues the tournament’s long history of attracting global stars of women's tennis. Next January’s ASB Classic, our 17th as principal sponsor, will be a fantastic
opportunity for Kiwi tennis fans to enjoy the most in-form women’s player to hit our courts.”
Radwanska won the Dubai Duty Free Championships, Sony Ericsson Open and Brussels Open in the current season. She was close on registering another title victory at the Wimbledon Championship and the Toray Pan Pacific Open but the
old guns Serena Williams and Nadia Petrova didn’t allow her to do so in respective tournaments.
However, it was the successful season for the Pole star who reached the second rank in the world but couldn’t dethrone the reigning world number one, Victoria Azarenka, to taste the ultimate glory of any tennis star. She is still
in the hunt to accomplish the goal and the tournament triumph at Auckland at the start of the season will definitely give the 23-year-old Pole confidence that will help her to play well at the Australian Open in Melbourne.
Goerges defeated Radwanska in the first round of Olympics and looked terrific with her form lately. So, it will be an interesting contest if both players are drawn together at some phase of the event.
