Agnieszka Radwanska slams down Angelique Kerber to reach the final showdown – Wimbledon 2012
World number three, Agnieszka Radwanska, scuttled past the eighth seed German, Angelique Kerber, to reach the final stage of the Wimbledon Championships on Thursday. It was a one-sided encounter; dominated all the way by the Pole
star who picked up the win in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.
All the expectations of an epic battle were flushed down the gutter when the 23-year-old Pole commenced the match in aggressive fashion; won the opening breakthrough in the third game of the match.
Kerber did well to hang on and win a breakpoint back in the sixth game of the match to tie the scores at 3-3 but she couldn’t hold her opponent from running away with a show in the eighth game. The Pole held her serve in the following
game and took the first set with no tension at all.
The German managed 23 points and lost the set with a gap of just five points in the end. Two aces were smashed by the Pole and one by her rival. Both players had two opportunities to break serve but Radwanska saved one to keep
the lead intact. It took just 29 minutes for the set to end that witnessed 20 winners shared equally by both competitors.
The second set was much more competitive and witnessed a double serve hold by both players at the start. However, the Pole took a decisive lead in the fifth game by breaking her rival’s serve and kept it intact until the end.
It took 41 minutes for the third seed Pole to round off the second set proceedings that featured 26 winners; 10 from the Pole and 16 from Kerber. However, eight unforced errors compared to just one of Radwanska sunk the German
in the end.
Radwanska stated in a post-match interview, “I really played great today. I had a tough quarterfinal match and it's always tough against Angie, so it's good I had a day off yesterday. Of course this was the semi finals of a Grand
Slam, and I was nervous at the beginning - you try your best but sometimes you do too much, and your hands are shaking a little bit - but after a couple of games I loosened up out there. This is what I've been dreaming of since I was a kid. Everybody wants
to play the final of a Grand Slam. These are the best two weeks of my career."
Agnieszka Radwanska takes on Serena Williams in the final showdown on Saturday.
