Agnieszka Radwanska squeaks past Lara Arruabarrena-Veci to reach round two – Mutua Madrid Open 2012
Fourth seed, Agnieszka Radwanska, crippled the local wild card entrant, Lara Arruabarrena-Veci, with a breadstick at the Mutua Madrid Open 2012 on Sunday. She joggled up a 6-3, 6-1 success against the 20-year-old to breeze into the second round at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Mandatory event taking place in Madrid, Spain.
The Polish number one devastated Arruabarrena-Veci in straight sets in just under an hour to occupy a spot in the round of 32. Encountering each other for the first time, Radwanska took lead in the head-to-head series by 1-0 against the Spaniard.
Radwanska passionately entered Park Manzanares and kept her serve in the second game to level the scores at 1-1. After Arruabarrena-Veci held her serve in the fifth game, the Pole stroke out the last four games successively and bagged the opener with a 6-3 win.
Ranked third in the WTA Premier Rankings, Radwanska carried her rhythm and swiped in the opening three games in a row before the Spaniard could hold on. She maintained her intensity after that and wiped out the last three games as well, swiping in the set with a breadstick.
Summing up the seed’s performance in this duel, Radwanska plucked her entire serves without facing any breakpoint and marked four out of eight break opportunities. She penned down a lower first serve share of 66 per cent as opposed to the wild card’s 76 per cent but impressively clicked 21 out of 27 points on it.
Next up for Radwanska is the winner of the match between Sara Errani and Chanelle Scheepers.
The top seed, Victoria Azarenka, will accompany the Pole in the second round. She tumbled over Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova in straight sets to progress.
"I was really looking forward to the start of this tournament," the Belarusian was quoted in a post-match interview. "Anywhere I go my goal is to win the tournament, and it's the same goal here. I did pretty well here last year and hopefully this year I'll do a little bit better."
Azarenka will next face the conqueror of the match between two qualifiers, Czech Republic’s Andrea Hlavackova and Australia’s Anastasia Rodionova.
