Agnieszka Radwanska stomps over Caroline Wozniacki to reach the semis – Toray Pan Pacific Open 2012
World number three, Agnieszka Radwanska, thrashed the former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki, in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 to register her third head-to-head win in the eighth meeting. It was a battle of an hour and 37 minutes
witnessing a one-sided show from the 23-year-old Pole who advanced into the last four players of the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo.
Radwanska broke the series of continuous losses at the hands of the 11th ranked Dane earlier in the season during the quarter-final of the Apia International Sydney. She lost five matches in a row before that clash drowning
to a trail of 2-5 in the head-to-head series. However, the turnaround this year has helped the Pole number one to reduce the deficit to just two matches.
Wozniacki was put under pressure right from the word go. She was forced to work hard for every point and that took a lot of energy out in the first phase of the match. However, despite a threatening start from the Pole, Wozniacki
managed to hang on to her serve in the first game. Radwanska won four straight points on her serve to make it 40:0 in the second game.
It was just a matter a time before the Pole star gusted away her opponent to a trail of two games. The 22-year-old Dane lost the breakpoint in the third game and just won a single point on her opponent’s serve that thumped her
to a deficit of 1-3.
Wozniacki recovered well with successive game triumphs to make it 3-3. She won a breakpoint in the sixth game to equalize the scores and a serve hold at both ends pushed the scoreboard to 4-4. Soon, the Pole regained the momentum
and swirled the proceedings in her favour with a breakthrough in the ninth game coupled with a hard fought serve hold that was good enough to round off the opening set.
The Pole carried the momentum in the second set; began with a breakthrough and protected the awesome start with a serve hold to make it 2-0 in her favour. Things looked pretty ordinary for the 10th seed Dane who was
under a lot of pressure to deliver at the big stages of the tournament. A trade of breakpoints didn’t hurt the cause of third seed Pole who held her serve to push the scores at 4-2.
Wozniacki failed on her serve for the third time and handed over the victory to her rival who will face the number one German, Angelique Kerber, in the semis.
