Agnieszka Radwanska stomps over Jamie Hampton to enter quarters – Toray Pan Pacific Open 2012
Polish number one, Agnieszka Radwanska, got the better of the American qualifier, Jamie Hampton, in straight sets at the Toray Pan Pacific Open 2012 on Wednesday. She nudged up a 6-4, 6-3 success against the world number 91 to book a spot in the quarter-finals at the Ariake Coliseum in Tokyo, Japan.
Seeded third in this event, Radwanska stayed on track to bid for her fourth year-to-date title after trouncing the American for the second straight time this year. After stealing the show in one hour and 32 minutes, the Pole improved to a 3-0 lifetime in the head-to-head series against Hampton and progressed into the final eight at this outdoor hard court event.
Radwanska, who was honoured of being a flag bearer at the London Olympics, stormed into this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Five event. She drew the first blood in the opening game and jumped to a 2-0 lead. Apart from losing her edge in the fourth game, the Pole broke Hampton’s serve once again and leaped to a 4-2 lead. She plucked her remaining serve with poise and clicked the set with a 6-4 success.
Ranked third in the world, Radwanska carried her rhythm in the following set. She broke her opponent’s serve twice and took a 4-1 lead. Despite losing her serve in the sixth game, the Pole sated focused and pulled out the set with a 6-3 score line after capitalising on another break chance in the last game.
The 23-year-old manipulated a better first serve share of 62 per cent as compared to her opponent’s 41 per cent and tremendously availed 30 out of 48 points on it. She brilliantly warded off eight out of 10 breakpoints she faced and converted five out of 11 break chances to her advantage.
Next in queue for Radwanska is the winner of the match between seventh seeded Na Li and the former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki.
The world number two, Maria Sharapova from Russia also earned the glory later that day. She juggled up a 6-2, 7-6(5) victory against the 16th seed, Lucie Safarova, in their second encounter.
