Agnieszka Radwanska tears apart Silvia Soler-Espinosa in the third round - Sony Ericsson Open 2012
World number four, Agnieszka Radwanska, hammered the 24-years-old Spanish rival, Silvia Soler-Espinosa, in the third round clash of the Sony Ericsson Open on Sunday. She gobbled up the win in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 taking just a fraction over 66 minutes.
Radwanska won the toss and decided the serve first. She was under the cosh in the opening game of the first set but managed to hold on to her serve. She won the next four points on the trot to register the first breakthrough of the set. It was the vital breakthrough that set the tone for the Pole who dropped just one point in the following game before taking a commanding lead of 3-0.
Espinosa did well to hang on to her serve in the following game to earn the open her account in the match but that was the only consolation game she could win in the opening set. The Pole broke serve in the sixth game and consolidated her lead to 5-1 with just a serve hold required to end the first half proceedings. The Pole did that with ease and marched on winning 28 points compared to just 11 of her rival in the first set.
The Spaniard had a chance to open the second set and ease her nerves with a serve hold. It would have kept the Pole chasing her all the time that is always a soothing feeling especially when the player is already a set down.
Unfortunately, the 72nd ranked Spaniard couldn’t kick-off the second half in her favour; lost the opening game and dropped another breakpoint in the third game. Radwanska held her serves with comfort that mounted a 4-0 lead at the start. An exchange of breakthroughs pushed the scores to 5-2 with Radwanska holding the following serve game to confirm the quarter-final spot in the tournament.
The Pole has won a title this year in Dubai. With this triumph, she improves her season record to 21-4. She will be up against the Serb former world number one, Ana Ivanovic, in the battle to book a spot in the quarter-final stage of the tournament.
