Agnieszka Radwanska vs. Serena Williams: final preview – Wimbledon Championships 2012
Now who would have expected the Pole starlet, Agnieszka Radwanska, to feature the Wimbledon Championships’ final among so many big names? Well, she is the world number three at the moment but yet there were a huge proportion of
tennis fans which didn’t anticipate Radwanska to be in the title match. Many were pretty sure that the booming world number one, Maria Sharapova, or the second ranked Belarusian, Victoria Azarenka would be locking horns once again for the coveted Grand Slam
title. However, it’s Radwanska to face the four-time Wimbledon champion, Serena Williams, in the final showdown this weekend.
The big match will be contested on the glorious Centre Court of the All England Tennis and Croquet Club in London on Saturday afternoon. After witnessing two weeks of breath-taking tennis, it is finally down to just these two women
to decide the champion among them and lift the crown at the only grass court Grand Slam event.
The sixth seed American powerhouse, Williams, buried the world number two, Azarenka, in the pile of aces in her semi-final battle before earning a title shot against the crafty Pole contender. Williams has been absolutely devastating
throughout the tournament, annihilating every single opponent who came in her way. She was the one who dismissed the defending champion, Petra Kvitova of Czech Republic, in the quarter-final stage of the competition.
While the tennis fanatics kept getting surprised by the falls of big guns from the tournament draw, third seed Radwanska continued to advance quietly. She outlasted the world number eight, Angelique Kerber of Germany to reach her
first ever Grand Slam final on Thursday.
Radwanska’s rise to the Top-Three this season has been an amazing feat for her and she has yielded a change to get her hands on even bigger glory on Saturday. The 23-year-old Pole might not possess the strength like Williams do
but crafty game play can be extremely tricky for the former champion in the final. Williams has defeated her in their only two prior meetings and will like to sustain her clean sheet in on Saturday as well.
"I played Serena a couple of times, but it was long time ago,” said Radwanska. “I didn't play her I think in last few years. But it's always tough. She's a very tough opponent and hitting the ball very well. Of course she's playing
great tennis on the grass. I think I don't really have anything to lose, so just going to try my best."
Everyone knows Williams is not a great mover on the courts and heavily relies on her power hitting and fiery serve game. On the other hand, Radwanska uses her pin-point hitting and precise shot making to make her opponents run
and exhaust during the matchup. It will be very exciting to see how the two contenders with different game styles will come hard at each other for the coveted Grand Slam title on Saturday.
"I have to go out there and win,” Williams commented, “Agnieszka has had a better year than I have. She's been way more consistent than me. She's done really well, so she's ranked higher than me. She deserves to be."
Serena remains the hot favourite for winning in straight sets but if Radwanska come up with a magical performance, she will require at least three sets to hunt down the mighty American in the final.
