  1. Ryan said Malkin... sorry, your answer was incorrect and that means that dave is our winner today with $25,000

  2. Malkin quit of his team in the finals. He pouted about playing the point of the power play. He said he was tired, and ran out of gas... If thats a franchise player, it going to be a team of quitters.. Stats mean nothing if you have no heart to go with those numbers. I dont like Crosby, but he went balls out, until the end.. I dont like Ovechkins celebrations and showboating, but the guy plays hard all game, every game. Neither of them are affraid to give a hit, as well as take one. Malkin on the other hand, would rather give the puck away, than to take a hit to make the play. Keep your flashy numbers, I will take a player with  heart.

  3. Malkin really came through this past season when Crosby was out with an injury. He's already proven he is one of the best raw talents currently playing in the NHL.

However, I'm going to disagree and say both Crosby and Ovechkin are more well-rounded players and, most importantly, more consistent.

For example, as well as Malkin played during the Pens' early playoff run, he fell apart towards the end. He made some key turnovers against the Wings that cost the Pens a goal here and there. I know it happens to every player once in a while, but ... I don't know, maybe he had a fever or something.

Anyways, all three are some of the best young talent in the NHL. I think when it comes down to that Stanley Cup overtime, though, I'll take Crosby or Ovechkin on the ice before Malkin.

  4. I must disagree.  Crosby is a phenomenal playmaker, and Ovechkin is a world-class scorer.  Also, you must consider that Malkin plays with Crosby.  Therefore, this question can't be completely and objectively answered without Malkin and Crosby playing an entire season apart.  Go Wings!!!!!!!

  5. Disagree. Malkin is a great player don't get me wrong but he sucks under pressure. The playoffs are a prime example.

  6. Malkin certainly does not suck. Each of the three have different aspects of their game in which they excel. Ovechkin hits the back of the net with more vigilance than anyone this generation. He is well on his way to another half-dozen Rocket Richard Trophies, if he beats out Rick Nash. Sid is arguably (Thornton) the best pure passer in the game today and is a great team leader. Malkin still seems like the type to just blend in. He hasn't yet made the effort to step into the limelight, but if his two-way skills improve, he will be among the top players in the league. It is so childish to say "Don't say he sucks," because any real fan is aware that malkin's "suck characteristic" is non-existent. Don't be worried about what other people think of your guy. As of July 2008, he is still the 2nd best player on his team.

  7. I AGREE!!! ANYONE is better than Crosby... I'm sorry to all the crosby fans but Crosby is a crybaby and Ovechkin... well I just don't like him. But Crosby is a really good player for his age but he is a faker and he always walks away from fights.

  8. well i'm not going to say anything about them sucking..cuz they don't, they are three of the best hockey players in the nhl.

  9. i think malkin will be better than crosby soon. but i dont think he's as good as ovechkin...at least not yet.

  10. I Don't Think Either Of Them Are Over-Rated Cause I Believe that they are great at What they do and that Is Playing Hockey.

Malkin is Amazing in himself no doubt.. I love him but when it comes to the playoffs he Chokes just like Dominik Hasek. The Wonder Twins are great together never forget that!

  11. I'm tired of people pretending these three players are in a league of their own.  Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg would shut both of those guys down on defense (if you don't think so, in the finals Pav and Hank were responsible for shadowing Malkin and Crosby, respectively.  You saw how much Cindy and Gina produced then...not so much.), and undress them in the offensive zone.

I am not disagreeing that they are world class players and some of the best offensive talent, especially at their age.  I am just sick of hearing the comparison between these three players, who believe it or not, are NOT the three VERY BEST players in the league.  Ovechkin can score, but he takes at least 5 shots a game (probably closer to 10 on average) and he plays in the Southeast.  Can somebody name one top tier goaltender, and four top tier defensemen in the entire division (I will judge later whether or not your definition of "top tier" is acceptable or not, i.e., if you say "Cam Ward" or "Tomas Vokoun", I will laugh at you)?  As for Crosby and Malkin, what have they proven?  You act is if it was those two that took the Pens to the playoffs.  Maybe you forgot that they were surrounded by veteran stars like Sergei Gonchar, Marian Hossa, and Petr Sykora.  Maybe you forgot that the only success the Pens had in the finals was back in their own end, between the pipes.  When all three of those players are trumped by equal or greater skill, athleticism, intensity, and physical play in the postseason, don't you think it's time to get off the bandwagon?  Give it up, they're not the best, and your hopes and dreams of fabricating their identities as today's hockey gods are going to be put to an end in 2008-2009 if the 2008 Cup Champs didn't do it for you this year.

By the way, I don't think Malkin is better than either player, simply because of his inability to contribute in the finals.  I think Alexander Ovechkin would have played with more determination.  Malkin seemed lost, scared, and confused.  While Sidney Crosby looked the same, he at least pulled his head out of his *** and did some leading occasionally.  I don't hate any of these players.  I think Ovechkin showboats more than he needs to, and I think both Malkin and Crosby whine and dive too often.  Still, I only hate the notion that these three players are and will be the best players in the league until the day they retire.  Eastern Conference, get over yourselves.  You're not fooling anybody who watches more than just superstars skating around pylons and going top shelf on bantam house team goalies like Kari Lehtonen and Vesa Toskala.

  12. Oven chicken is just that....a chicken....Malkin is soft...hmmm....does anyone see a pattern here?

The Kid may yet come to be known as Sir Chirpsalot but he ain't scared of nothin!

    Go Canada!

  13. geno doesnt suck but he's not better than ovie he's pretty close though.  The thing is geno doesnt have the rusky connection quite like ovie does that is semin, fedorov and kozlov who should really bust his points next season.  Plus the language barrier malkin doesnt speak out much and his personality is nothing like ovies.

  14. Tough to say on which player is better. Considering that Ovechkin plays wing instead of center like Crosby and Malkin. While playing on seperate lines Malkin and Crosby dominate. Ovechkin looks for a center to make the play. They all have the ability to score and to make the plays when they need to. It's just really hard to compare those three players when they all have that high calibur of skill.

  15. I dont agree that he is BETTER per say...but he is great...and underestimated, he really proved himself when Crosby was injured, he has a shot that could take the head off an eskimo....and hes not afraid to get dirty....both of which earn him huge respect in my book...the big difference?  Im not afraid to say it as I am a married woman and not interested in such things...Sidney is a pretty face...the girls cant get enough of him, hes bringing the pretty boy look to hockey thus a whole new fanbase(Im not saying Malkin isnt attractive, im a mom and they are all so young i just wanna pinch their cheeks and bake them some cookies LOL)...Also Sid isnt afraid of publicity he gets up there on the camera and says his peace....(I know Malkin isnt yet able to do this and I of course dont hold it against him, and im sure he is trying his damndest, english is a tough language to master and I would feel just as akward trying to talk to people in a country where I had yet to master the language)  I hope to see more public speaking from Malkin as this skill grows...i think for most people that is a big part of the difference in popularity and that gap will start to close when he gets on camera more

  16. NO!!! Malkin just got better because Crosby got injured.

  17. i think that malkin is a better player than crosby

    crosbys just simply tooo overrated...

but i think Ovechkin is a better player than malkin, seeing that he is in a worse team than malkin.

malkin is obviously talented, but there are other amazing players in pittsburgh that just simply can assist him for easy goals and points

  18. I agree that he is better then Crosby but not better then Ovechkin and here is why.

Ovechkin is Carrying his team on his back. While Malkin has alot more support around him with Staal and Sykora. Ovechkin doesn't have that kind of talent around him. Sure Backstrom and Semin are solid top 6 forwards but they aren't as good as Malkins Teamates. Ovchekin is also a better goal scorer then Malkin. which i think is more difficult then getting assists. Ovechkin also uses his body to check people better then Malkin does. now these are just my opinions. Malkin is a Very good hockey player but i believe Ovechkin is better.

  19. Well they definitely don't suck obviously.  I dont think there is anyone out there right now that would not agree that those are the three best players in the league.  I agree that Crosby is overrated but you have to realize that this is because of his market-ability.  When you look at Malkin or Ovechkin they are foreigners that speak very poor english who like Malkin who doesnt speak any at all.  This makes it hard to be a great spokesman for the sport. By that I mean a spokesman for new people to come in and watch the sport (which is what we need) because true hockey fans dont care about that stuff...

You make a great point that Malkin is becoming your franchise player, but I wouldn't go as far to say he is better then Ovechkin yet.  Maybe very soon, but not yet.  THe main problem is that they are two different players with different styles and who's to say one is better than the other.  Wait till the end of this year, if all three stay healthy it will be much clearer who is the better player.

Washington is going to be consistently good this year instead of playing catch-up all year so you will see how these three players can play on the same level somewhat, and that is where the true comparisons can be drawn.  In my opinion Ovechkin is slightly better followed closely by Malkin (the behind the scenes franchise player) and then Crosby (the spokesman)

  20. All three are great players.  Although I can't stand the Pens I have to give Crosby and Malkin credit.  What would have happened if Crosby wasn't injured so much this year?  Would Malkin scored as much as he did??  Or would those points have been scored by Crosby??   Tough to say.

Ovechkin is not overrated, just look at his stats and his awards that he won!   What he does with the puck is unreal!!!!

  21. Malkin has potential. I would argue in favour of Crosby and Ovechkin at this time though...

  22. wrong

  23. It is hard to say that Ovechkin is overrated when all he does in his first 3 years the league is put up 310 points in 245 games.

  24. Malkin did a great job picking up the pieces when Sid was hurt, but then was non-existent so although he may "become" the best player, he is not now, a very good player non-the-less.

Crosby also has barely showed the potential he has. He shined quite a bit and has an amazing head for the game, great puck control. But all and all has a lot more to his game then we have seen.

    Ovechkin....Hart Trophy...."Enough said"

He was the #1 man in the league this year, he even received an award from his peers to say so..

End result 3 of the best players in the game right now...but Ollie is the best on paper, the best in awards, and the most talented to watch.

  25. I have to disagree. I think Crosby is the best out of all of them. He has that Gretzky type aura. Great playmaker and he makes his teammates better - you cant go wrong with that. Also, 100 pts every season for his entire career isnt out of the question.

Malkin is good, but he simply makes Malkin better.Plain and simply.

Ovy is just an offensive force on a team where he is the only player. Sort of like when Jagr was there.

    1. Crosby

    2. Malkin

    3. Ovy

  26. Ovechkin is NOT over rated neither is Crosby. You can't look at Crosby's leadership and playmaking capabilities and Ovechkin's scoring talents and then say they are over-rated. C'mon.

  27. I have to disagree. But I do think that those are the top three players in the NHL. I think Crosby is number one. Just because everyone talks about how good he is and how he is a franchise player, don't let that make you think he is overated. He broke 100 points his first two seasons and his third he would have easily broken it. He still had the most points per game ratio in the league. And yes he is only 20 and is carrying the wieght of the NHL. So just because he looks like Andy Samburg from SNL, don't think he is a joke.

Next I would say is Ovechkin. The guy plays like a demon every shift and some how his shots just go in. Now I know he has broken 100 points every season and hasn't had much help on his team. But he is playing in the easiest division in the NHL and he does not posses that leadership that Crosby has. Plus two years ago Crosby hit 120 points, Ovechikin has not touched that yet. He will, but he hasn't yet.

Third is Malkin. Malkin is easily, or was easily the most underrated. The guy only made it to the allstars because Crosby got injured and yet he was the only other player to break 100 points this year.  Crosby is expected to be amazing every shift while Malkin is expected to be good every shift. Everyone is usually talking about Crosby, so when Malkin does amazing, it takes more notice. And i think Malkin is amazing and had an amazing year. But he did struggle in the playoffs near the end and a couple of other shifts.

I dont think any of these players are overrated, but I do think that Malkin is underrated. And that is why some people that followed this season feel he may be better. But in the end, the only reason why the Penguins are still in Pittsburgh is because Crosby was on the team two seasons ago. If is was just Malkin, they might not be around. So I would definitly say that Crosby is currently the franchise player and the best in the league.

  28. Better than Crosby, not better than Ovechkin.

  29. idk

crosby and malkin are both extremely talented

i love them both... they compliment eachother.

as for ovechkin.. idc bout him haha

  30. Did you watch the Finals? Obviously not. Malkin did not even show up. Great players are great when it counts. He was not. Yes, he is a good player but he does not bring the all-around talent the Sidney and Alexander bring to every game.
