If the Panthers can beat the Chargers (or at least put up a good fight) without Steve Smith in the season opener, they will be a really big force to be reckoned with though the rest of the season.

I doubt that the Panthers could beat the Chargers with Steve Smith, much less without him. The Chargers might be the best team in the NFL this season, and I'm not a fan of either team, just giving an unbiased opinion.

I'm still at a toss up with it.  It's just one game early on in the season..teams change a lot over the course of a season.  I have a hard time buying or selling a team just one game into the season.  If they're able to beat the Chargers week 1 you guys will definitely look good...but it's not to say that you can just write them in to be a good team this year.

I am a huge Panthers fan. I think  the Carolina Panthers will shock a lot of people this year. I don't necessarily think the Chargers game will make a huge difference since it is the first game of the season. As long as we can stop LT we will have a great chance of winning this game. We have our starting quarterback back, we went 8-8 after losing him in week 3 so imagine how much better we will be with him, and not David Carr or the old but respectable Vinny.

one game that early in the season doesnt really mean too much. i mean look at the Giants they were 0-2 at the beginning of the season.

Yes.  Their division has many question marks and winning that game would strike fear into the young Falcons and Saints and possibly the Bucs.

the chargers are possibly the best team in the nfl. i don't think the panthers have much of a chance even with steve smith. they will outplayed on offense and stopped by defense. o and steve smith is really overrated.

If Jake Delhomme is healthy and they establish enough of a passing game to give them running room it wont matter how they do against the Chargers....they will be a playoff contender. They have good enough talent and play in a weak enough division (and conference) that as long as they avoid the poor Qb situation they faced when Jake went down they will be good enough to be a serious contender. Like every team health at the key spots will dictate how they do in the end but there is no reason to believe they arent a talented squad.
