  1. Int he 16th, 17th centuries in Europe, deforestation caused a problem for ship builders, but you are talking about much later.

    Deforestation in the US made farming possible.  By the end of the 19th century with bison almost extinct, the real problem in the US was forestation, where trees and forests started growing in places where the bison had always kept them down.  Of course, as trees always do, they sucked up all the water, and the grasses withered, exposing bare ground, which led to the dustbowl.  In the 30s the government had a program to pay farmers to cut down any trees on their property.  Suddenly, they had much more water available.  This program was so successful that the government expanded it and farming boomed.
