Agriculture in colonial america?

I need to write an essay "assessing the role that agriculture played int he economy of any two colonies in the Americas. I wanted to write on tobacco in Virginia, and maybe sugar cane in ********* ? can someone help me by providing a little information? Its a SHORT essay.

(and where was sugar cane big during the colonial period? The Carolinas?)
