Agustin Velotti beats Wayne Odesnik in straight sets – Uruguay Open 2011 CH
Argentinean Agustin Velotti won his first round match in straight sets against American Wayne Odesnik at the 2011 Uruguay Open. Velotti defeated Odesnik 6-3, 6-2.
The first round men’s singles competition started with both players trying to create an early lead into the first set. Velotti delivered two aces and conceded double faults twice.
Odesnik could only score a single ace and did not concede any double fault. The American had a 70% first serve winning rate while Velotti could only secure a 38% rate.
Velotti, ranked at 347th spot in the world, won 80% points from his first serve and 75% from his second. His opponent, Odesnik, ranked at 127th place, won 69% points from his first serve but his second serve points reduced drastically
as he could only win 43% points.
19-year old Velotti played his first set service games with ease and without any major errors. He did not let Odesnik break any of his service games. The American, on the other hand, was unable to save the only break point that
he faced.
The Argentinean, five years younger than Odesnik played decent shots with the racquet and won the first set 6-3.
With the second set in progress, the 25-year old Odesnik was again not playing his service games in securing points. Velotti yet again proved his worth as a promising tennis player as he delivered three aces. Odesnik did not concede
any double fault and neither did Velotti.
The young player from Argentina played some good shots in the second set and maintained his dominance. He won 81% points from the first serve and 45% from the second.
25-year old American looked wobbly while playing his service games. He could win 57% points from his first serve and his second serve declined one more time in the match. Odesnik could win only 17% points from his second serve
that kept him trailing far behind Velotti.
Velotti, who is new in the ATP division, looked in top form as he outclassed his opponent. The Argentinean, who has an ATP win/loss ratio of only 5/8 was confident as he kept winning his games and maintained a lead against Odesnik,
who has won 121 games in ATP and lost 93.
Odesnik might have become overconfident as he faced Velotti, and may have thought of thrashing him, but the Argentinean was the one who did the damage. Velotti retained his dominance in both sets and sailed into the next round
of the 2011 Uruguay Open.
