Agustin Velotti wins final round qualifier against Juan-Martin Aranguren – Uruguay Open 2011 CH
The men’s singles qualifying round at the 2011 Uruguay Open continued on November 12, 2011. Agustin Velotti (Argentina) played the match against compatriot Juan-Martin Aranguren. Velotti won the match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1.
As the first set progressed, the 19-year old Velotti scored two aces and was right on the spot. He did not concede any double faults, which showed his focus in all of his service games. The 28-year old Aranguren could not score
any ace and conceded double faults thrice in the set.
He was facing a younger opponent but could not meet up with the decent pace that Velotti was going on in the match.
Velotti had a 53% first serve winning rate while Aranguren had a 54% rate. Velotti, ranked at 347thspot in the world, won 75% points with his first serve and 57% points with his second.
On the other hand, Aranguren, ranked at 507th place in the world, was playing his service games ineffectively. He won 57% points from his first serve and could win only 42% points from his second serve.
It is interesting to note that neither of the two players could break each other’s service games. Velotti could not save the only breakpoint he faced, but he maintained the lead that he created in the set. Aranguren was unable
to save both of his breakpoints, which further reduced his pace as he was already going in a deficit in terms of winning his games.
Aranguren won four games in the first set but he lacked the pace with which his opponent was moving ahead. Velotti won the match 6-4.
With the second set in progress, Velotti was again on target with his service games. He scored three aces and conceded double faults twice in the match. His double faults were because he was going at a faster pace and because of
his inexperienced nature on the tennis court.
Aranguren, on the other hand, did not score any ace and did not concede any double fault. He was playing with caution so he could win the second set but Velotti did not let this happen.
Velotti saved all of his breakpoints while Aranguren could not save either of the two breakpoints that he faced. Velotti had a 65% first serve winning ratio.
This was lower than Aranguren’s 72% first serve winning rate but Velotti’s decent pace and good run in his service games kept him in a dominating lead in the second set.
Aranguren could only win one game in the second set, which was a testimony to Velotti’s confident shot selection and powerful playing style. Velotti won the second set 6-1 and cruised into the next round of the 2011 Uruguay Open.
