Agustina Soledad Garcia leads Argentina to victory over Kiwis by 3-2 in 2011 Rabo FIH Champions Trophy
Argentina defeated the Black Sticks Women by 3-2 in a Pool C match at the 2011 Rabo FIH Champions Trophy being played at Wagner Stadium, in Amstelveen, the part of metropolitan area of Amsterdam, Netherlands.
With this victory, the Las Leonas have remained undefeated against the Black Sticks women in eight matches in the Champions Trophy events, winning the last seven of these eight while they have won their last 11 matches against the Black Sticks Women at the
international tournaments, Champions Trophy, World Cup and Olympic Games.
The match was played in a very competitive environment, where the Las Leonas dominated the Black Sticks Women for most of the time, taking an early by scoring three goals in the first half, while in the second half they remained goal-less till the end. The
Black Sticks Women too played well, but not as well as Argentina. They made comeback efforts in the later part of the first half as well as in the second half, but eventually fell short of one goal at the end.
Agustina Soledad Garcia, Luciana Aymar and Rocio Sanchez Moccia were the goal scorers for the Las Leonas, while Clarissa Eshuis and Charlotte Harrison did the job for the Black Sticks Women.
The coach of the Black Sticks Women looked contented over the overall performance of his players in the match, but had some concerns over the forward-line which missed some chances in the first half.
“I don’t think our forwards treasured the ball well enough in the first half. The second half was improved – we started to pass the ball rather than running it, we held possession for longer periods. Overall, I think we played better as a team as the game
went on,” Mark Hager, coach of the Black Sticks women commented after match.
Meanwhile the Black Sticks Women will have to face Argentina’s Las Leonas in the bronze medal match which will be played on Sunday, July 3 at the same venue in which the Kiwis will be looking to reverse the result of today’s match.
