okay here is the problem. i know, i could easily do this myself, but im kinda running outa time and have a ton of other homework. please? :]

if the wooden block shown at the right is sanded and 1/8 of an inch is removed for the top, and from the bottom, how much is the volume of the block decreased? the "wooden black shown at the right" is 6in by 3in by 2in. :D

  1. Volume = base length * base width * height.

    You give us three measurements (6", 3" and 2"), but you don't say which is the length, width and height.

    Without a picture to guide us, we don't know which of those three measurements is shortened.

    So we can't solve it for you.

    The best I can estimate is that the volume decreases by a value = (length in inches)*(width in inches)/4

    EDIT

    2 = height,

    3 = width

    6 = length

    So the original volume is

    = length * width * height

    = 6" * 3" * 2"

    = 36 cubic inches

    The new volume is

    = length * width * height

    = 6" * 3" * (2" - 1/8" - 1/8")

    = 6" * 3" * (16/8" - 1/8" - 1/8")

    = 6" * 3" * 14/8"

    = 31.5 cubic inches

    The difference = 36 - 31.5 = 4.5 cubic inches

    My original estimate was

    = length * width / 4

    = 6 * 3 / 4

    = 18 / 4

    = 4.5 cubic inches

    So the volume decreases by 4.5 cubic inches.
