Question:

Ahhh!!! What camera do I buy?!?

I'm thinking about buying either a Canon 350D (Rebel XT), a 400D (Rebel XTi), or a 450D (Rebel XSi). What is the right camera I should buy? What lens should I buy with it? I'm thinking about money-wise, how long it's going to last, the quality of the camera, and the best for amateurs. Please, I know I'm asking a lot of things, so please give detailed answers and reasons why. You could compare only two of them if three is too much of a burden. Thank you!

  1. I would suggest you buy the cheapest one (money wise) then   get the best lens you can afford other than the kit lens. Each one will give you great images when coupled with a better lens if you do your part. Later on when you have learned more  about photography, you can upgrade the body with features that you would like.

  2. First of all, what's your budget?

I own the EOS 400D and I'm really happy with it. If you have the money, get the 450D, it has LiveView (you have a live preview on your screen), 12 MP and a better, stabilised kit lense than the 400D which had no image stabilisation.

A supplemental lense I can recommend is the "nifty fifty", the Canon 50mm 1.8, which is extremely cheap but offers a great image quality. Perfect for portraits.

  3. I own the Rebel XTi, also, and really like it.  I do not want or need the live view on the XSi, although when I bought mine, I would have bought that if it had been for sale then.   But I am satisfied with the XTi, as I wouldn't use the live view to shoot a picture anyway

Why not go to a good camera store and handle these models.  See if there is one that feels better to you.  Forget about the XT, as it has been discontinued.   Try the XTi and the XSi and see if you like one better than the other.  The XTi has been a very popular model and is tried and true.  You wouldn't go wrong with that one!   And it would leave you some money to get a longer zoom if you wanted to get another lens.
