  1. You need to call the social security administration.  It can be really hard to get another social security card.   Your biggest concern right now is that someone can steal your identity.  You need to put a fraud alert in with all three major credit bureaus.  You also need to call all your banks and creditors and let them know what happened.  For the next year, you will have to check your credit score regularly and make sure no one has opened an account with your info.

  2. You must report your SS card as lost immediately, and they will be alerted to watch for unauthorized activity.

You can find a Social Security office near you here:

    https://secure.ssa.gov/apps6z/FOLO/fo001...

The Social Security Administration will either reissue your card with the same number,  or if the circumstances call for it (e.g. confirmed identity theft)  - you may even be issued a brand new number (Don't worry, your work and witholdings history will follow you to your new number if they have to give you a new account).

Once you get your replacement card - do yourself a big favor and memorize the number, then  put the card away in a safe place (fireproof box, whatever) and leave it there.   Don't write it down on a slip of paper, and  don't carry your card with you.

Unless you are specifically required to provide the card itself as proof of identification (opening a bank account, presenting it to the HR department at work, or for government documentation or receiving government benefits) there is no reason to ever carry your social security card on your person.  Doing so just makes it more likely that you will lose it, or have it stolen,

Go to your local SS Office or call and report it. I don't know if someone is going to use it, but you don't want to take chances, do you? It would be wise for you to double check the places that you may have it just in-case.

If you don't find it, you know what to do.

  4. Get a hold of your nearest Social Security office asap. They'll know what to do.

  5. Contact your local social security office. They will be able to report it lost or stolen and can issue you a new card and/or new number.

  6. Don't freak out! The most important thing to do is get a new one. Look on-line for your local social security office. You'll need some other form of ID, maybe a birth certificate. It will take you an afternoon in the office and they will send you a new card in the mail.

I wouldn't worry too much about identity theft, but if you are really concerned, go on-line or to your bank and buy identify theft insurance. It doesn't cost much, and may give you some peace of mind.

Another thing you can do is put an alert out on your credit report. This will tell creditors that your identity might have been compromised. You can do this on-line at the websites of the three credit bureaus.
