Ahmed Akram Abbas and Mandy Loots grab gold medals: African Senior Championships - Recap
Ahmed Akram Abbas of EGY-ZZ and Mandy T Loots of RSA-ZZ grabbed gold medals of the Men’s 200m butterfly and Women’s 200m Individual Medley (IM) on day six of the 11th African Senior Swimming Championships 2012 in Nairobi, Kenya on Saturday, September
15.
The 15-year-old Akram Abbas met expectations of his fans by clinching gold medal of the distant butterfly discipline in a scintillating fashion. With his unmatchable pace, Akram Abbas remained half a body length ahead of his closest competitor and tapped
the wall for gold medal with a timing of 2 minutes and 04.92 seconds.
The gold medallist was followed by Marawan Adel Osman of EGY-ZZ, who stayed 0.43 seconds away from his former finisher and settled on the wall as second position holder with a timing of 2 minutes and 05.35 seconds.
Osman was traced by Myles M Brown of RSA-ZZ, who was 0.10 seconds away from his preceding swimmer and clocked a time of 2 minutes and 05.45 seconds for bronze medal.
Fourth position of the event was occupied by Kurt A Carolus of RSA-ZZ, who stayed 2.12 seconds apart and completed his race in a time of 2 minutes and 07.57 seconds.
Afterwards, Loots proved her supremacy for the title of Women’s 200m IM. The 34-year-old Loots continued her winning streak on second last day of the championship and reached the victory stand for gold medal by clocking a time of 2 minutes and 20.55 seconds.
Loots was traced by Rene’ D Warnes of RSA-ZZ, who remained 2.05 seconds away from the champion and secured silver medal of the race by posting a time of 2 minutes and 22.60 seconds.
The second position holder was followed by Rowida Mohamed Tolba of EGY-ZZ, who stayed 3.45 seconds apart and gained bronze medal of the race by reporting a time of 2 minutes and 26.05 seconds.
The bronze medallist was traced by Souad Cherouati of ALGE-ZZ, who was 1.88 seconds behind and finished her race in fourth best place by producing a time of 2 minutes and 27.93 seconds.
Next was the Women’s 50m freestyle playoff, where Lehesta Kemp of RSA-ZZ faced no difficulty in sustaining her position in the playoff as she seized gold medal of the event with a timing of 26.08 seconds.
The champion was chased by Mai Atef Abdelfatta of EGY-ZZ, who was 1.16 seconds apart and earned silver medal of the race with an effort of 27.24 seconds.
Subsequently, Abdelfatta remained 0.11 seconds ahead of Hossam EL Badri Rowan of EGY-ZZ, who completed her race in third place with an effort of 27.35 seconds.
Fourth position of the event was obtained by Kyna Pereira of RSA-ZZ, who posted 27.48 seconds.
Furthermore, Abbas and Loots were happy with their title claiming efforts.
