Ai Miyazato all set to defend her Evian Masters title
Evian Masters is just around the corner and the players are looking forward to one of the most competitive golf tournaments of the year.
As the event draws near, all eyes are on Ai Miyazato, the defending champion of the event. In fact, she has won the event twice, in 2009 and 2011.
Fans are anxious for a third win for the Japanese star but experts remain unconvinced, given the amount of golf she has played in this year.
Miyazato has won her second title of the 2012 LET season. She played in the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship and won by a stroke’s lead. She overcame a shortfall of five strokes and played brilliantly to defeat Mika Miyazato, from Japan, and Azahara Munoz
of Spain.
This win is particularly important for Miyazato as it marks the ninth win of her LPGA career. Miyazato was very excited about her win in the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship.
She said, “After the second round, I didn’t really expect that I can win this tournament, you know, because I was five shots behind”.
This win has caused many experts to reconsider their opinion about the third Evian Masters trophy for Miyazato. Now the opinion is that Miyazato could get lucky this time and bag the title.
She will face tough competition this year. Evian Masters attracts top talent from around the world and this time is no exception.
Once the initial rounds are over, Miyazato will have a lot on her plate. She will play against Stacy Lewis, Suzann Pettersen, Yani Tseng, Paula Creamer and Angela Stanford, amongst others.
This year’s Evian Masters is significant for another reason as well. This is the last time the event will be played as a minor tournament. In 2013, Evian Masters will be the fifth and final major event of LPGA calendar.
Miyazato has a great 2012 season so far. She has won two titles, LPGA Lotte Championship and Walmart NW Arkansas Championship.
Like the Arkansas event, Lotte Championship was an event that demonstrated Miyazato’s expertise in golf. She won by a four-stroke lead. She faced Spanish player Azahara Munoz and Meena Lee from Korea.
