Ai Miyazato wins the Evian Masters
Ai Miyazato smashed an aggregate of 15-under-par in the final round of Evian Masters to take a two-stroke win over Stacy Lewis. The Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) event took place at the Evian Masters Golf Club in France.
The Japanese golfer teed-off from the front and reeled three birdies to compile a score of three-under-par 36. She birdied one more hole on the back against two bogeys and wrapped the day with a 70.
The winner banked on €363,079.68 worth of prize money, of which a huge chunk was donated to the earth quake victims.
While making the announcement of the donation, Miyazato said, “I haven't decided yet what to do exactly, whether it'll be all the amount or a sum of it, but I'll definitely be making donations from this earning.”
Miyazato, who has won five times on the LPGA Tour last year, admitted that it was hard to keep her focus on the game during this season because of the tragedy that struck Japan in March. Despite that, she managed to keep herself consistent
and eventually won a title to make her country proud.
American golfer Lewis came second behind Miyazato with a difference of a mere two strokes after she clamped three birdies and one bogey in the day.
Three strokes shy of the winner sat a trio of divas, which included the second round leader Miki Saiki, In Kyung Kim and American ace Angela Stanford.
Kim stepped into the final round with a 64 and soon became the closest threat to the winner after she birdied three consecutive holes. Kim’s challenge stalled when she dropped four shots in the day, a disappointing end to her great
start.
One stroke behind Kim finished Suzann Pettersen, Morgan Pressel and Rang Hong. Pettersen, who hails from Norway, wore a black band on her arm during the last two rounds in protest of the terrorist attacks in Norway. She birdied six
holes against two bogeys to post a score of 68 in the day.
The lowest score of the day was posted by Chella Choi, who signed for a 66 after clamping six birdies.
