Aidan O’Brien, one of the top trainers in Great Britain
If you plan to list down the most successful trainers in 2012 GP season, Aidan O’Brien’s name will quickly come to your mind. The skilful handler has grabbed plenty of big prizes, and considering his progress, one can easily expect him to earn more.
The list of his victories includes many graded events. He trains the greats like Camelot, So You Think, Was, Excelebration and St Nicholas Abbey.
Camelot, one of his top horses, recently failed to become the first Triple Crown Winner since 1970. The 3-year-old’s unbeaten run came to an end at Doncaster, where he finished second to Encke in the Group 1, Ladbrokes St Leger Stakes.
It was a disappointing outcome for Camelot, who secured five straight victories at the start of his career. No one can take the credit away from the trainer, who guided him to emphatic victories in the first two legs of the British Triple Crown.
Aidan himself expressed disappointment over missing the mega opportunity. He stated after the St Leger Stakes defeat: "It wasn't what we thought it was going to be. It was a steadily run race and Joseph said he was a little bit fresh with him, but that was
probably always going to happen in a slowly run race.”
"You have to take your time on him over a mile and six which he [Joseph] did and when he got out he just stayed on rather than quickened. In the Guineas he quickened and in the Derby he quickened, but he just stayed on here. It's disappointing for everybody
but that's the way it is. That's racing.”
Aidan’s family is full of talent, as his son, Joseph O’Brien, is a wonderful jockey. O’Brien junior has guided several horses to glory, including Camelot.
Only in the ongoing season, Aidan has secured plenty of Group One wins, including the Keeneland Phoenix Stakes, Prix du Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard - Jacques le Marois, Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby, 150th Anniversary of Prince of Wales's Stakes and many others.
The season is not over yet. Aidan’s several horses are lined-up, and it will be no surprise, if more big victories come to him. We wish him the best.
