Aidan O’Brien targeting record equalling victory in Coral-Eclipse – Horseracing news
Aidan O’Brien is targeting a record equalling sixth victory as a trainer in the Coral-Eclipse on Saturday, July 6, 2013.
The veteran trainer has not yet finalised his runners for the event, but has indicated that Declaration Of War and Mars might be the ones representing him. The former of the two has a terrific record and he will definitely make his camp proud, if he is given
a chance in the all important contest.
However, track conditions will be crucial as always and the organisers are trying their best to ensure that everything remains under control. The forecast suggests that dry weather will prevail in the coming weekend, which is a positive sign for all of the
participants.
As a result, clerk of the Sandown course Andrew Cooper said, “Having walked [the track] again at lunchtime today it is clear that we will need to water next 24 hrs (2-3mm) to ensure good to firm on Saturday.”
O’Brien will be really happy with the dry conditions, but he would not want the ground to be extremely fast. Therefore, he will back the watering on the track, which will keep it good in most parts.
One of the best trainers of the modern era might announce the name of his runners after taking a close look at the ground. He has a couple of days to decide, but he would have made up his mind to some extent.
According to the 43-year-old Irishman, “There is a strong possibility that Declaration Of War will run in the Eclipse. A final decision will be made early in the morning. We plan to run Mars in the race. We've decided to give Camelot a little break. We're
going to wait and see whether the spark he had in the first half of last season will come back.”
Although Mars is a talented performer, he lacks the confidence to deliver top quality results at the highest level. Therefore, it will be a clever idea to go with the other option.
If O’Brien manages to win the Coral-Eclipse, he will only be the second trainer in history to register six victories in the event. Prior to him, the record was held by Alec Taylor jnr.
